Property Renovation In Szeged

Renovation Costs - Repair Costs - Extra Unwanted Costs

Just as a reminder, from reading the other sections, here is a quick checklist of things to do and remember; preferably before buying a property in Hungary.

  1. Pre-Contract - Make sure all parties agree to pre-contract terms and conditions, regardless if they are on holiday etc.
  2. Be prepared for events such as no electricity or lighting. By yourself a halogen camping light as they last a long time on batteries. I never had to change mine, which lasted weeks and are still working.
  3. Check whether tiles are concreted or pasted, and how much it will cost to have them removed.
  4. Ask about apartment defects such as previous water damage.
  5. Ask about Housing Association Monthly Fees, Electricity Prices, Gas Prices, Water Charges and so on.
  6. Let the builders know your EXACT, DETAILED, requirements; even if they think you are stupid or they think you are thinking they are stupid. As long as the message is clear about what your requirements are who cares whose stupid or not.

The overall renovation went pretty smoothly with the majority of its problems being about money (Hungarian workers demanding their money NOW) and time (waiting for double-glazing and doors to be measured, manufactured and fitted). On and Off it took from October to April (7 Months), but in reality took around 4 Months only; which I do not think is too bad considering the trips to/from the UK, the language barrier, exporting goods, getting money and paperwork together and so on.

I think the overall cost of the renovation is excellent, compared to what it would of cost in the UK, especially when you consider that I got the labor for free whereby at certain times I had three workers on a particular job. And there was not really too much I could of saved on in terms of buying the materials. Note: The grand total below is estimated because the renovation in terms of buying new furniture for example is still ongoing at this time.

NOTE WELL - The reason why I got free labor from the electrician, tiler and plasterer was because they were in some way related to my friend, Tünde, or friends of those relations. Furthermore, the labor prices shown on this web page are rough quotations of what a standard client might of paid. In other words, I asked the electrician etc what they would of normally charged a client so that you have a rough idea of labor costs in Szeged. If you want to get a quote from them and/or hire them please e-mail me for their contact details.
