Budapest Zoo HistoryBudapest Zoo, which also comprises of a Botanical Garden, is located in City Park; behind and to the left of Heroes Square (Hősök Tere), not far from the Széchenyi Gyógyfürdő WebsiteSzéchenyi Gyógyfürdő (Therminal Baths & Swimming Pools). To the right of the zoo is the Budapest Circus WebsiteFővárosi Nagycirkusz (Capital Great Circus).
The zoo and botanical garden, which are now 150 Years Old, house several rare species of Monkey, Lemur, Parrot, Camel and Kangaroo among other special animals such as Crocodile, Otter and Owl. They also have the common animals (i.e. Lions, Tigers, Elephants, Hippopotamus, Rhinoceros, Giraffe, Monkey and Birds), reptiles and insects that you would expect to see in a zoo.
There are also Snack Bars, Cafés, Buffets and Restaurants dotted around the zoo as well as Toilets, Baby Changing Rooms, A Playground, Bicycle Storage Area, First Aid and Nursing Room. Smokers also have a Smoking Area.
The animal houses, attractions and projects are numbered 1 to 26 on the map, going from left to right and clockwise around the map, making the zoo easier to navigate. Furthermore, the zoo is also split up into continents (i.e. Australia House, South-East Asia House and American Tropicana).
Budapest Zoo has two main entrances - On the left side and right side of the property
As you walk around the zoo you will instantly see well looked after, clean, animals that have plenty of space to move around. The park itself is also kept very clean and tidy. In terms of animal area size, not including pedestrian paths and the botanical garden, I would say Budapest zoo is roughly the same size as Szeged zoo. Either way, you will need all day to visit the entire zoo; unless you split your visiting time over two half days.
Camels, Zebras, Elephants and Tigers are just a few of the wild animals at Budapest zoo
As said above and with all zoos I have visited in Hungary: The animals are well looked after and clean, living in modern, natural and spacious enclosures. With so many specimens from so many species it must be a huge and difficult task to keep the zoo at such a high level of maintenance. For this, the zoo must be congratulated.
Different types of monkey and bird are at the zoo as well as unusual animals
One criticism I do have is that many description boards are not in multiple, common, languages such as English, German and Spanish. I am sure to print out a few A4 posters (billboards) would not break the zoo's annual budget.
Not all description boards are in English, so better to buy a Guide Book.
Tunde, her son, her daughter and I visited the zoo in August 2018 for 3 hours and found the zoo very relaxing and enjoying. The 300 HUF per scoop ice cream was refreshing and delicious and the restaurant food was affordable.
Four Adults cost 12,000 HUF
